    Kenneth Neal Waltz, born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is best known for developing the neorealist or structural realist approach to the study of international relations.

  • A central figure in the development of international relations scholarship in the post–World War II (1939–1945) era, Waltz has also made notable contributions to the understanding of nuclear weapons proliferation and its consequences.

    Waltz received his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College in 1948 and his graduate degrees from Columbia University in the 1950s. He retired from teaching in the mid-1990s and, as of 2005, was serving as Emeritus Ford Professor of Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley and as an adjunct professor of political science at Columbia University.

    Waltz’s earliest contribution, presented in Man, the State, and War: A Theoretical Analysis (1954), organizes the primary causes of war into three distinc
