Ian Joseph Somerhalder was born on the 8th of December in the year 1978 in Covington, which is situated in Louisiana, United States of America to Edna, a massage therapist, and to Robert Somerhalder, a building contractor.

He has a small amount of Cajun, English, Scots- Irish in him. He was also into many outdoor activities such as boating and fishing as well as swimming, and talent in theater groups so he was inclined toward arts.
